Shimajiri Mangrove Forest

Mangroves are a plant that grows in brackish waters where freshwater and sea water intermingle near tropical and subtropical coasts. The mangrove forests in Shimajiri are a natural monument of Miyakojima Island, and you will find all varieties of Miyakojima mangrove tree here — including the loop-root mangrove, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, and Kandelia obovata. They are found along an inlet towards the Shimajiri village off of national route 230, which heads from Miyakojima Island to Ikema Island. A pedestrian walkway here lets you take a leisurely 10-15 minute stroll.
