Kumejima Tsumugi

Kumejima Tsumugi is said to be the birthplace of pongee silk. It is designated as an important intangible cultural property of Japan. This rare silk has a blackish-brown color and is noted for using plants from around the island and mud rich in iron as a mordant. Kumejima Tsumugi no Sato is where you can try your hand at weaving a coaster or dyeing a bandana.
