Ojima Island is located in the south of Nanjo City, which is popularly known as the “City of Heart” because of its heart shape. The island is one of the most popular spots to stop by on a drive through the southern part of Okinawa, and is crowded with tourists from Japan and abroad.
Ojima Island is also known as an island with many cats, and is loved for its relaxing cats, beautiful sea, fresh seafood bowls, and hot Okinawa Tempura.
“Okinawa Tempura”, Ojima Island’s specialty
“Okinawa Tempura” is a must-try when you come to Ojima Island. Generally, Japanese tempura has a light and crispy batter, but Okinawa Tempura is characterized by its thick batter and its glutinous texture. It’s a popular Okinawan soul food enjoyed as a snack by local people.
“Imaiyu Market” where you can enjoy fresh sashimi and seafood rice bowls
Ojima Island is also a town of fishermen where you can enjoy fresh fish. For those who want to enjoy shopping and a delicious bowl of rice topped with fresh seafood, the “Ojima Island Imaiyu Market” is the place to go.
The market is filled with independent stores such as fresh fish stores and souvenir shops, selling freshly landed fish and colorful prefectural fish unique to Okinawa, making it a fun place to visit.
Why not buy a bowl of rice topped with fresh fish sold at a reasonable price that only a fishermen’s town can offer, and enjoy it on the terrace outside while looking out at the sea?
There is also a shop where you can enjoy sweets and drinks. At “Fisherman’s coffee Shimae”, you can enjoy freshly baked bagels and delicious, carefully hand-dripped coffee made with beans from Yamada Coffee Okinawa.

Glass boat experience in the sea of Ojima Island where sea turtles live
If you want to enjoy the sea as well, glass boat is a great way to do so. A glass boat is a glass-bottomed boat that takes you on a 30-minute cruise to see the fish lurking at the bottom of the sea.
The captain of the boat says, “This is an aquarium at the bottom of the sea.” Enjoying the sea breeze and listening to the captain’s commentary, who has a thorough knowledge of the sea, will be an exceptional experience.
Strolling around and enjoying island time
Ojima Island is a small island with a circumference of 1.7 km. You can stop by, fill your stomach, and go on to the next sightseeing spot, or just relax and enjoy the cats and the sea. Please enjoy at your own pace.
